Week 3 Post 2

School-related reflection 1.     Discuss how, through this program, you changed from a Year 1 student to a pre-professional.  What specific elements in the program helped to develop you as an emerging legal assistant?  You may wish to relate your new sense of professionalism to, for example, research you have done - explain how 'real' you think your classroom/lab experiences have been; why it is that you have come to feel more mature in your attitudes/thought processes/people skills.  These are only examples of what you may wish to discuss. You may choose your own topics but please be specific - how, why, what, when! My learning mainly depended on the textbook and googling. I think creating my Portfolio was the best learning method. It allowed me to learn, think, organize and understand law theory. Producing the documents through the law program was helpful for me to be pre-professional.  I could easily understand the immigration law documentary via this program beca

1.     Give examples of oral and written communication used in your work placement.  Did you draft your own communications?  Are you using 'clean formatting'?  Are you using Outlook.  If so, what features are you using? I and my supervisor mainly communicated verbally, but their important issues must be conveyed with written communication, printed and kept in the file. I did not use Outlook, because Time Matter provided us with schedule table.  2.      Provide an example of a problem you encountered and describe how you solved it. I have not encountered any problem. 3.      Are you using a To-Do List/notebook to prioritize your work to meet deadlines. My supervisor organized my work, so I didn't need to use a To-Do List. 4.      What is one of your weaknesses?  How did you overcome this in your work placement? My weakness is that I have difficulty in communication in English. I made an effort to explain my questions and they tried to understand them as

School-related reflection 1.     What resources are you using at your placement?  The electronic and physical closed files are good resources to understand the immigration process. They involve all documents from beginning to end in respect to each case. Google is helpful. 2.     Have you discovered resources on the Internet that were/are useful to you, other than those introduced in class?  If so, please share the URLs. The website " Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada"  is the most important. 3.      Review the list of responsibilities submitted by you before your placement.  Indicate whether the list was accurate or whether you were exposed to different responsibilities or did fewer than were listed.  My supervisor wants me to experience overall office procedures, so I am learning all legal office procedures.  4.      What do you consider two of your strengths?  How are you using them to your advantage at this placement? Two of my streng

Week 2 Post 1

1.     Describe the software and versions, tools, and equipment used in the office. The software "Time Matters" is used in my office for managing the clients who want to immigrate. It provides  Calendar, Tickler, Contact, Matter, Document, and Messaging Management.  The equipments used in my office are scanner, photocopier, fax, telephone, staple, clips, rubber band, and so on. 2.      Are you using/will you use any of the legal software learned in your programme?  Explain.  If you are using new software, was it easy/difficult to adapt to.  Why? I mainly use the "Time Matters". This software is new for me but easy to learn. One of the my tasks is to check that there is scanned applications in the clients' folder of this software. I am studying the required immigration documents through the closed clients' documents  and correspondences between the law office and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada  saved in this software. The corr

The office environment 1.       What are your work hours; how are you supervised. I work from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The office manager supervises me. 2.      Describe your work area. My work area is a small room in the basement. Every staff member works in their own small space, and they use their telephones for communicating each other. In my room, there are a big desk, two monitors and a telephone. E very staff member is working with their two monitors.  3.      Describe your daily routine. I start with closing files. If new clients' consultations are appointed, the receptionist asks me to prepare a new file and preliminary documents for the consultation.  Everyday my work changes and increases. 4.      How is work initiated? Is it dictated, written out in longhand, sent to you by email or do you write your own correspondence, emails, etc. My work is initiated by the dictation because I do not have my internal email. However, my lawyer always emphasi

The office manager provided the organizational tree of staff members and informed me about what I should learn. She introduced me as an intern, and they welcomed me. I am working with two staff members. The office manager has been teaching me about overall documentation for immigration files, and the receptionist has been teaching me how to prepare new client files, how to deal with retainer, how to complete letters, PC law, and so on. 3.       Were you provided with a manual of office procedures?  If so, what type of in
